Title pretty much says it all, but here's how it happened...we had everything set up with AT&T to get have DishNetwork installed for $20 p/month for the family pack of channels. After multiple "miscommunications" with AT&T (we communicated and they did not), we gave up in frustration. Cable is ridiculously expensive here and even DirectTV is more than we are willing to pay, so we've gone the past three weeks with no TV of any kind. A couple of days ago, we were talking about it and we came to the radical conclusion that maybe we didn't have any use for TV. We are Netflix subscribers, and we can get any TV show we really want to watch (without commercials) through Netflix. We can also order any kids shows for Caleb that we'd like (Caillou, Sesame Street, VeggieTales, etc.)
It is very freeing to give up TV. We don't waste time flipping channels looking for something to watch, we never watch commercials, and we aren't even tempted to get frustrated because we're missing our show for one reason or another. We can read about any news that we want to know about online, so all in all we don't see any negatives about this new TV-free life. It feels so good, that we're thinking that we may just continue this way even in a few years when we can more easily afford to pay for TV!

Sounds like a good decision:) We tossed the TV on the back porch for 4 months for a different reason. No video/CD/etc. Assets definitely outweighed the liabilities for that choice at that time:) Technology is a great asset as long as you own it and it doesn't own you:) Even TV series such as 24 are on DVD an "rentable"...so you can catch up on a bunch at a time.
Biggest negative...easily purchaseable solution...need to get weather alert from Radio Shack or equivalent, especially with tornados that hit your region. Would be silly to go to a mall during a tornado alert that you didn't know about:)
Miss you. Look forward to seeing everyone in the new habitat soon.
Bravo! You've made the right decision, no doubt about it!
Sarah and I are only buying cable because it comes with the apartment, so it's a minor leap to the digital channels. Even then, I prefer to just record what I want to watch and watch it on my own terms. It is way too easy to get sucked into watching a lousy television show just because it's on!
We just reached our "no TV for 1 year" mark & decided to keep it up. Langston still gets a 1 hour limit on any computer (playhouse disney, noggin, netflix, etc.) & we have watched some tv series together, but all in all it has been great. We realized how crazy commercials were when we went to some friends' homes for ballgames & L. would be shocked & ask, "Why did they throw that car off the cliff?," or whatever else insanity he saw. It's good to not have to explain stupid stuff or hear him beg for the millions of junkie things advertised via kid shows. Good luck! I hope it goes as well for you!
